YHWH’s Name: A Tanakh Study

The Correct Pronunciation
http://www.snydertalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Yahwehs-Name-the-Correct-Pronunciation.jpg
Some people believe that the correct pronunciation of the Mighty One’s Name was lost, but according to the Encyclopedia Judaica[1], that’s not so. However, because people use it so infrequently, the correct way to pronounce the Mighty One’s name remains a source of considerable debate.

Many people believe that all the letters in Yahweh’s Name are consonants, but that is not the case either.  In fact, each letter in His Name is a vowel-consonant or semivowel[2]. The Hebrew spelling of Yahweh, yod-hey-vav-hey, appears below.  Since Hebrew reads right to left, “yod” is the letter on the far right:

Most Bible scholars and Hebrew linguists believe that “Yahweh” is the correct way to pronounce the Mighty One’s Name.  The Y-a-h in His Name sounds like “Yah,” and the w-e-h in His Name sounds like “way.” That said, considerable debate persists about whether to enunciate the second syllable in The Mighty One’s Name with a “v” sound or with a “w” sound, but compelling evidence proves that the “w” sound is correct[3].

Scriptural Definition of the word "Name"

This will prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that the word "Name" not only means "character and reputation" but also a literal written and spoken name.

This is the definition of the Hebrew word "shem" which is translated as "name" all throughout scripture

Strong's # 8034 Shem; a primitive word [perhaps rather from 7760 through the idea of definite and conspicuous position; compare 8064]; an appellation, AS A MARK or memorial of individuality; by implication honor, authority, character: - + base, [in-] fame[-ous], name[-d], renown, report.
As you can see from the above definition, Yahweh's name not only represents His character but the Name Yahweh is also HIS MARK! What is a mark but something that is written? The Name YAHWEH also is His memorial of individuality. This definition goes hand in hand with scripture:

Sh’mot 3:15 (KJV) And the Mighty One said moreover to Moshe, Thus shalt thou say to the children of Yisra’yl, YHWH Mighty One of your fathers, the Mighty One of Avraham, the Mighty One of Yitz’chak, and the Mighty One of Ya’akov, hath sent me to you: this [is] my name for ever, and this [is] my memorial to all generations.

Man has set up many memorials for himself such as "The Unknown Soldier" or "The Wall" for instance. Can you imagine the punishment one would receive if someone had gone up and destroyed one of these memorials? Now if we wouldn't desecrate one of man's memorials, then why would anyone want to desecrate Yahweh's Memorial - His Name!? We do not have the right to change His name to whatever we want to call Him.

YHWH's Name Designates Yahweh Himself

Sh’mot 3:15 (KJV) And the Mighty One said moreover to Moshe, Thus shalt thou say to the children of Yisra’yl, YHWH Mighty One of your fathers, the Mighty One of Avraham, the Mighty One of Yitz’chak, and the Mighty One of Ya’akov, hath sent me to you: this [is] my name for ever, and this [is] my memorial to all generations.

The Third Commandment: What does it mean?

Many take the third commandment to mean that we should not use the Heavenly Father's name alongside a swear word or profanity. I could see where it certainly might mean this. Others say that taking His name on our lips while living a life of sin is another way of taking His name in vain. I agree with this also.

However, I have found that the third commandment means much more than this. Replacing the Heavenly Father's name with a title of our own choosing such as "the LORD", "THE MIGHTY ONE", "Adonai", or "Ha Shem" is another way of taking His name in vain. Let's look at the third commandment as written in the King James Bible:

D’varim 5:11 "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy The Mighty One in vain: for the LORD will not hold [him] guiltless that taketh his name in vain."

If we examine this verse in the Hebrew text that the King James Bible was translated from, we would not find "The LORD" or any word that carries such a meaning. What is actually there is the Heavenly Father's true name, "Yahweh". I believe it is important to consider whether or not this tradition is something the Heavenly Father would desire us to follow.

Let's take a moment and look at the Webster's dictionary definition of the word "vain":
vain 1. Having no real substance, value, or importance; empty; void; worthless; unsatisfying. ``Thy vain excuse.'' ... 2. Destitute of forge or efficacy; effecting no purpose; fruitless; ineffectual; as, vain toil; a vain attempt. ...

Considering the meaning of the word 'vain', what greater way to bring Yahweh's name to emptiness,  worthlessness, and having no real substance, value or purpose than to remove His name altogether from scripture and substitute it with a title of our own choosing?
Those who have chosen to practice this are doing just that. This practice is so widespread and so complete that few people even know the Heavenly Father has a personal name. Yahweh chose to place His name in scripture nearly 7,000 times. And each one of those 7,000 times it is replaced with a title (such as "The LORD") in 99% of all translations. In fact, in most translations the third commandment (as written) is a transgression of itself! Why? Because the third commandment forbids bringing His name to nothing, yet most translations do just that.

To further demonstrate this point, let's look at the Hebrew word that is translated "vain" in this verse.

D’varim 5:11 (KJV) Thou shalt not take the name of Yahweh thy Mighty One in vain <7723>: for Yahweh will not hold [him] guiltless that taketh his name in vain <7723>.

The number after the word "vain" in this passage refers to Strong's word #7723 in the Hebrew Lexicon. This same Hebrew word (#7723 'Shav') can also be found in another commandment just a few verses later. But in this instance, it is translated differently:

D’varim 5:20 (KJV) Neither shalt thou bear false <7723> witness against thy neighbour.
Here we have the same Hebrew word <7723> translated "false." Might this shed light on the third commandment as well? We know that to say that the name of the Heavenly Father is "The LORD" is actually a false statement. Most translations are full of false statements. For instance, the King James Version reads:

Yesha’yahu 42:8 - I am the LORD: that is my name: and my honour will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

The above is not a true statement. His name is not "the LORD". His name is Yahweh. "The LORD" is not a translation of the original, it is a substitution of the original. The translators did not translate, they purposely substituted the true name of the Heavenly Father for something else so that they could follow their tradition. It should instead read:

Yesha’yahu 42:8 (RNKJV) I am Yahweh: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

So if we want to keep the ten commandments, we should never replace Yahweh's name with a false name or title of our own choosing. Doing so would be breaking the third commandment. This is not the only way to break the third commandment, but we can see that it is certainly one way of doing so. We are not supposed to add or take away from the scriptures. But in doing this, man has chosen to both add and take away.

Yahweh considered it important enough to include something about His name in the Ten Commandments. He considered it important enough to include a warning that we would not be held "guiltless" if we choose to break it. Therefore, in spite of what others may think, let's keep His commandments by restoring what Yahweh placed there originally. Let's set aside vain tradition and walk in the original truth of Yahweh... just as He inspired it.

IMPORTANT NOTE AND UPDATE ON Pronounciation
Lately, I have noticed that there are many using the form "Yahuah" or "Yahuwah" based on the fact that the name יהודה "Yahudah/Yehudah" (Y’hudah) contains the same letters as http://www.eliyah.com/hisname.gif with the exception of the ד Daleth (D) being added (Hebrew reads from right to left). In other words, Yahweh's name contains http://www.eliyah.com/hisname.gif (Yod Heh Waw Heh) and the name of one of the sons of Yisra’yl (Y’hudah) is יהודה (Yod Heh Waw Daleth Heh.)

They say that the Heavenly Father's name can be "made simple" by learning that since there is only one letter difference between the two names, we can learn the pronunciation of the Heavenly Father's name by looking at how Y’hudah's name is pronounced in Hebrew.

But the truth is, we cannot determine the pronunciation of one Hebrew word by looking at how another word is pronounced with similar letters. In Hebrew there are numerous words that have only one letter difference but they are pronounced completely different.

A couple of examples in Hebrew as it relates to Yahweh's name:

1.    יהצה #3096 is pronounced "Yatsah" in Hebrew. This is in contrast to יהודה "Yahudah" which is only one letter different.
2.
3.    The verb Hama (#1993) is found in Jer. 6:23, 48:36, 50:42 in the qal imperfect 3rd person masculine singular form, and is spelled יהמה but pronounced "Yehemeh." Again, this is in contrast to יהודה "Yahudah" which is only one letter different.
4.
Notice that there is only is only letter difference between those words and http://www.eliyah.com/hisname.gif and יהודה but they have vowels which are not the same. If we removed vowels from two English words that had similar consonants, no one would argue that we can figure out the vowels of one by knowing the vowels of another.

If the "Yahu" in "Yahudah" is in reference to Yahueh/Yahweh (and this is not certain), the "dah" comes from a different Hebrew word, so we can't rely on that to arrive at the correct pronunciation of http://www.eliyah.com/hisname.gif.

In fact, there are examples in Hebrew where two completely different words are spelled exactly the same way, but are pronounced completely different. The word שאול, which is pronounced "Shaul" (King Saul's name) is spelled exactly the same as the word שאול, pronounced "Sheol." "Shaul" means "desired" but "Sheol" means "grave." The vowels are completely different, but the word is spelled the same.

The reason why Yahweh's name is upon His people is not because "Yahudah" contains part of Yahweh's name as some claim. Yahweh's people are called by His name because of the elements seen in the priestly blessing:

B’midbar 6:24-27 Yahweh bless you and keep you; 25 Yahweh make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; 26Yahweh lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace." ' 27 "So they shall put My name on the children of Yisra’yl, and I will bless them."

So in conclusion, to base the pronunciation of the Heavenly Father's name on how another name or word is pronounced is not sound reasoning and should be completely disregarded when seeking to understand how http://www.eliyah.com/hisname.gif is pronounced.

Also, it is important to understand that in Hebrew, the verb form determines how the vowels sound. This is not unlike English where the verb "Run" changes to "Ran" if past tense is intended and "Running" if present tense is intended. In Hebrew, the vowels sounds will change depending on whether it is 1st, 2nd or 3rd person, or whether it is masculine or feminine, etc.

In Sh’mot 3:14 Yahweh said to tell the people of Yisra’yl that His name is "I AM THAT I AM" or "Ehyeh asher ehyeh." We know that "ehyeh" is the way you pronounce "Hayah" (a verb meaning, "to be") in the first person form.

Why then did He say to call Him "Yahweh" in Sh’mot 3:15? The form "Yahweh" is the 3rd person form of the same Hebrew verb, "Hayah." Yahweh was declaring who He is in saying "I AM" ("ehyeh") but when we say "Yahweh" we speak of Him in the 3rd person form.

Why I proclaim the name of Yahweh

The most common question I hear among those that I share the truth of the name is "Doesn't Yahweh know who I'm talking to? Why does it matter what I call Him, He answers me anyway?"
I believe that it is true. Yahweh does and will answer prayer and accept praise from those who have no knowledge of His true name. But what about those who DO know but don't care?

Tehillim 44:20 (NKJV) If we had forgotten the name of our Mighty One, Or stretched out our hands to a foreign the Mighty One, 21 Wouldn’t the Mighty One search this out?  For He knows the secrets of the heart.

What does Yahweh really want us to do on this issue? Continue to call Him whatever we want? Or to call Him by the name He has assigned to Himself?

I do not think there is anything wrong with calling Yahweh our Father, Master, Creator, etc. which are all fitting titles. What I think Yahweh would have a real problem with is changing His name from Yahweh to "Lord". It is extremely ironic, if not prophetic what Yahweh declared to Yirmeyahu when we understand that the word "Baal" means "Lord."

Yirmeyahu 23:26,27 "How long will this be in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies? Indeed they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart, who try to make My people forget My name by their dreams which everyone tells his neighbor, as their fathers forgot My name, for Baal."(LORD)

Also consider what Yahweh declared to Hosea: Hosea 2:16 (KJV) And it shall be at that day, saith Yahweh, that thou shalt call me Ishi (My Husband); and shalt call me no more Baali. (My lord) For I will take away the names of Baalim out of her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name.

I tell you, it struck me as odd that Baal's name is never changed or translated and therefore lives on while Yahweh's name is falsified over 7000 times in scripture! But I think I might know why. See here, if they did try to translate the name Baal, then there is one thing they would have to deal with. Look at how the verse would read if they did not restore Yahweh's name:

M’lakhim Alef 18:21 (NKJV) And Yliyah came to all the people, and said, "How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is the Mighty One, follow Him; but if Lord (Baal), follow him." But the people answered him not a word.

One might be quite confused when reading the text. Because of this relationship between Baal and Lord, I prefer not to use Lord at all. Lord is the word used to replace Yahweh's name. I'm not saying that the entire Christian world is worshiping "Baal", but the coincidence here seems quite striking.
It is truth that many times in scripture, we see His people calling on His name. Men during the time of Adam called on the name of Yahweh.

B’resheet 4:26 (NKJV) And as for Shet, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then [men] began to call on the name of Yahweh.

Avraham called upon the name of Yahweh: B’resheet 12:7 (NKJV) Then Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." And there he built an altar to Yahweh, who had appeared to him. 8 And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent [with] Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to Yahweh and called on the name of Yahweh.

Moshe called upon the name of Yahweh: Sh’mot 3:15 (NKJV) Moreover Mighty One said to Moshe, "Thus you shall say to the children of Yisra’yl: `Yahweh Mighty One of your fathers, the Mighty One of Avraham, the Mighty One of Yitz’chak, and the Mighty One of Ya’akov, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.'

Davwid called upon the name of Yahweh: Tehillim 116:13 (KJV) I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of Yahweh.

Tehillim 116:17 (KJV) I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of Yahweh.

Yliyah the prophet called upon the name of Yahweh: M’lakhim Alef 18:24 (NKJV) "Then you call on the name of your the Mighty Ones, and I will call on the name of Yahweh; and the Mighty One who answers by fire, He is Mighty One." So all the people answered and said, "It is well spoken."

Yesha’yahu 52:6 (NKJV) Therefore My people shall know My name; Therefore they shall know in that day That I am He who speaks: `Behold, it is I.' "

Let's look at an end time prophecy. Will Yahweh's people be calling on His name at that time, in this age?

Z’kharyah 13:7 (NKJV) "Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, Against the Man who is My Companion," Says Yahweh Tzva’ot. "Strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered; Then I will turn My hand against the little ones.  8 And it shall come to pass in all the land," Says Yahweh, "That two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die, But one- third shall be left in it:  9 I will bring the [one]-third through the fire, Will refine them as silver is refined, And test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, And I will answer them. I will say, `This [is] My people'; And each one will say, `Yahweh is my Mighty One.' "

Here is another prophetic scripture reveals His people are using His name: However, if I told you that my name was Jim Bob then I would not be telling you the truth. Here is an example of a falsification:
Yesha’yahu
42:8 (NKJV) I am Yahweh, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images. THIS has been changed to: Yesha’yahu 42:8 (NKJV) I am the Lord, that is My name; And My honour I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.

If we say HalleluYah, we can know what it really means! (HalleluYAH means "Praise You YAHweh") When we speak to Yahweh, it is on a personal basis through a personal name. If we proclaim Yahweh, we can know that we are proclaiming His name, just as all those in scriptures have done.

As Moshe said: D’varim 32:1 (NKJV) "Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; And hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. 2 Let my teaching drop as the rain, My speech distill as the dew, As raindrops on the tender herb, And as showers on the grass. 3 For I proclaim the name of Yahweh: Ascribe greatness to our Mighty One.
